Design SHIFT Partners with industry leaders to offer Unique and Unrivaled Open Source Privacy Device using Secure NFC protection
Groundbreaking ORWL desktop PC is available for Q2 Shipping
Menlo Park, April 10th, 2017 — Design SHIFT, building digital security, today announces in collaboration with Intel, Maxim Integrated, Quanta Computers, and ST has developed a new category of desktop PC for applications requiring high level of security and privacy including NFC features and open source.
“This is a great achievement for the Design SHIFT team to have launched ORWL, and so powerful to have had the chance to partner with such key players in their respective expertise,” said Olivier Boireau, CEO of Design SHIFT. “We believe ORWL is the piece of technology the market has been longing for.”
ORWL is a desktop PC designed to provide the security needed against physical attacks, enabling new privacy and security applications in healthcare, financial, government and industrial infrastructures. The security is based on two subsystems: the security subsystem is in control of supplying power and managing encryption key/access control, and the PC subsystem provides the standard computing environment.
ORWL comes with Ubuntu, Windows 10, or Qubes OS pre-installed, but users can install and run any modern 64 bit Intel-compatible operating system. Ubuntu is our preferred choice of system as it provides a very strong balance of features. It is noted for its installation scripting and default system configuration working well with a wide variety of modern hardware and is reliable and stable.
The ORWL device hosts an Intel Skylake Core m3 processor, 8GB RAM, 120GB or 480GB SSD, Intel 515 graphics, USB 3.0 Type-C ports, Micro HDMI port, and supports 4K videos. This
system can run GNU/Linux-based distros and Windows 10.
Furthermore, the device is protected by an active mesh in its casing. Any attempt to breach the case, made of a type of brittle plastic that’s prone to shatter if punctured, triggers the MAXIM controller to delete the encryption key that grants access to the user’s protected data.
ST has provided the NFC controller giving critical functionality to the ORWL device. Manufacturing of the device is handled by Quanta Computers giving flexibility on the
quantities of desktop PCs to be made.
Design SHIFT is actively pursuing getting ORWL certified as a cryptographic module under a US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Federal Information Processing Standard known as FIPS 140-2. This is the standard under which the US government, financial institutions, health care providers, and other regulated industries store and process sensitive data.
The ORWL device is shipping Q2, 2017, pricing upon request.

About ORWL:
ORWL is a unique new category of desktop PC designed for banking technologies to protect sensitive data. ORWL requires two factors of authentication, a key and a password. It protects against physical attacks and will erase the SSD encryption key if tampered with, enabling new privacy and security applications. The innovation offers physical protection in a consumer computer available to the mass market. ORWL runs many standard OS out of the box, it is open source. The security is based on two subsystems: the security subsystem is in control of supplying power and managing encryption key/access control, and the PC subsystem provides the standard computing environment.
